CELBAN Test Format

The CELBAN test format refers to the structure and organization of the exam. It typically includes four components: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The exam may be administered in paper-based or computer-based format, depending on the testing center and available resources. 

The Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN) is an English language proficiency test specifically designed for internationally educated nurses (IENs) seeking to practice in Canada. The CELBAN assesses four language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Here's an overview of the format for each skill:

CELBAN Listening format:

• • 1. 1. • The Listening component consists of three parts: 

            • Short Dialogues, 

            • Long Dialogues, and 

            • Talks/Lectures.

          • Candidates listen to recorded conversations and monologues related to healthcare scenarios and answer multiple-choice questions.

          • The Listening test lasts approximately 45 minutes.

CELBAN Reading format:

• • 1. 1. • The Reading component assesses the candidate's ability to understand written English in healthcare contexts.

          • Candidates read passages related to healthcare topics and answer comprehension questions.

          • The Reading test lasts approximately 60 minutes.

CELBAN Writing format:

• • 1. 1. • The Writing component requires candidates to produce written responses to prompts related to healthcare scenarios.

          • Tasks may include writing patient charts, incident reports, or letters to colleagues.

          • Candidates are evaluated on their ability to organize ideas, use appropriate vocabulary, and communicate effectively in writing.

          • The Writing test lasts approximately 50 minutes.

CELBAN Speaking format:

• • 1. 1. • The Speaking component evaluates candidates' ability to communicate verbally in English.

          • Candidates participate in role-playing activities, discussions, and presentations related to healthcare situations.

          • They are assessed on their pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and ability to convey information clearly.

          • The Speaking test typically lasts between 20 to 25 minutes.

Overall, the CELBAN is designed to assess language proficiency in healthcare contexts, focusing on the skills and knowledge required for effective communication in nursing practice in Canada.
